This ceramic cup displays an old time dohyo arena scene with wrestlers in their kesho mawashi (fancy aprons). The arena audience can be seen at the wrestler's feet and are visible at a distance. The image is similar to those created in original ukiyo-e style wood block prints from years gone by. The characters at the bottom of the scene are the top division ranks (Yokozuna, Ozeki, Sekiwake, Komusubi, and Maegashira). Note the vertical bamboo poles. This image is from a time when the dohyo roof was supported at the four corners by posts versus today's dohyo roof which is suspended from above by the arena's roof.
Images and characters are printed in an attractive dark green.
This tea cup holds 8 ounces and is 2.75" in diameter by 4" high and has a painted, dark rim. Microwave and dishwasher safe. Designs are stamped and glaze is hand finished so may display uneven dip/swirl marks.
