Authentic Sumo Nobori (Wrestler's Tournament Banner)

Regular price $3,500.00 Sale

Imported from Japan.

This is an authentic Nobori that was displayed outside of one of the Grand Sumo Tournaments in Japan in the early 2000's.  The wrestler's name is Oikari who wrestled from 1995 until 2004.  He reached the rank of Maegashira 11 in March of 2000 and retired November 2004.  He belonged to the Isenoumi Beya (current makuuchi rikishi Nishikigi and Ikioi).

After retiring he remained in sumo and is currently Kabutoyama Oyakata for Isenoumi Beya.  He can also sometimes be seen announcing ringside for the tournaments.

The Nobori is 17.5' tall and 34" wide.  It comes with the original loops for hanging on a mast (mast not included).  If you don't have an 18' vertical space it can also be hung horizontally.

The writing on the Nobori has the standard War Fan (gyoji's paddle) at the top of the Nobori then Oikari's name along with the standard honorific sekitori character (関).  At the bottom is the supporters' group Osaka Isenoumi Beya Koenkai.  The reverse of the Nobori is the same image but in reverse (painted through).
